2. Appear in person and sign — for signature certification, do not sign the document in advance unless otherwise advised, depending on the form of certification required.
3. Receive the document and proceed to the next step — check the name, passport number, destination country, and number of copies before submitting the document to the Department of Consular Affairs, an embassy, or the designated recipient.

The term "Notary Public" is commonly used, but under the Thai system, this type of certification is carried out by an attorney who has completed training and is registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, known as a "Notarial Services Attorney." This attorney certifies verifiable facts, such as the identity of the signer, a signature made in the attorney’s presence, or that a copy matches the original — not that the entire content of the document is true.

What Documents Do I Need to Bring, and How Long Does It Take?

In general, you should bring the original document to be certified as a true copy, and the signer's original ID card or passport in cases of signature certification, along with the recipient's requirements. Once Certified by an Attorney, Can the Document Be Used Abroad Immediately? How Does This Differ from Consular Certification or an Apostille?

Not always. Certification by a Notarial Services Attorney is certification at the point of origin. In many cases, the destination still requires further certification by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in some countries, an additional layer of certification by the destination country’s embassy. An Apostille is a different, international certification system, which will enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027 (not yet in effect at this time). Until then, the existing certification process still applies.

What Is the Difference Between Certifying a Copy and Certifying a Translation?

Certifying a copy confirms that the copy matches the original document presented. Certifying a translation relates to the accuracy of the translation or the translator's signature.
